Latest News: Transition and Merger

We are excited to announce the transition and merger of the Secular Humanists of Calgary and the Alberta Secular Association into the Alberta Humanist Association.

Why all these changes?

Although our organization reaches out to one of Alberta's largest demographics we are still very new and operating with a small volunteer basis which makes running two separate organizations just not feasible. Also operating two separate nearly identical organizations duplicates expenses and demands a lot of time.  This change just makes sense.

How Will The New Organization Run?

The Alberta Humanist Association will be a provincial voice for Humanists, Atheists, Agnostics, and other non-religious identities in Alberta and will campaign for a progressive and secular society.

We will strive to bring about a progressive society where being good without a god is an accepted and respected way to live life. We will accomplish this through our defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by our outreach to the growing number of people without traditional religious faith, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview.

Our Main Focus And Goal Will Be Campaigning For And Advancing Secularism

This organization will remain a nonpartisan educational, non-religious advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the separation of religion and government as the only way to ensure freedom of and from religion, including the right to believe or not believe, for all openly.

How Will This Affect Current Membership?

All memberships going forward will be $20/yr. Current active members will continue on as new members of the Alberta Humanist Association until the end of their term and can be renewed under the new membership fee of $20/yr.

We invite all Albertans who hold to a desire to see the province end its religious privilege to support this organization by donating and or becoming a member.

All proceeds will be used to cover the cost of running the organization - website - emails -  marketing and promotional costs. As donations and memberships grow we will be able to ramp up our campaigns by hiring part-time staff who will be able to give our organization the attention it needs to be successful.  For those who have journeyed with us as the Secular Humanists of Calgary, we know that running a successful organization by volunteers alone is enormously challenging and next to impossible.

There is a lot of work to be done in this province and we tend to be here for the long run and so moving forward with an eye on being able to hire part-time staff is imperative.
